Mushiokuri

A mysterious custom passed down from ancient times

AOMORI

The hidden world of disappearing agrarian culture

Mushiokuri is a traditional event held in farming villages to drive away pests from crops and pray for a bountiful harvest. This tradition still survives in the Tohoku region, which has many farming villages. Each village has a different custom, whether it be installing a giant thatch figure or burning an effigy of a straw doll as an evil spirit. You will encounter a unique sight and experience based on the regional belief of "chasing away evil."
